Unlike most European capitals, the Greek capital can boast of an extensive variety of Athens beaches. Whether you are looking for a sandy beach or a pebble beach, seeking watersports or simple relaxation, you’ll find it all within easy reach of the city.

Piraeus Beach

The closest beach to central Athens at just 30 minutes’ bus ride away, Piraeus Beach is unsurprisingly a very popular spot with locals and tourists alike. It has no shortage of sand either, and on a sunny day it’s the perfect getaway from the urban sights of the city. You can also take a nice walk around the port area of this seaside community.


This seaside town 20km south of Athens is home to just 6,000 people, but it boasts a great public beach that consistenly wins blue flags from the European Union. With a whole host of sporting and children’s facilities on site, this well organized beach resort is a top choice among Athens beaches. Accessible by car or bus.


This long open strand is a top Athens beach when it comes to windsurfing, swimming and other beach watersports. Located just an hour’s drive from the city, it’s also a big hit with weekending locals who come here to sample the fresh fare at one of many fish tavernas.


Although it’s a bit further away from the city than some of the other beaches, this long, pine tree-encircled Athens beach is considered one of the best in the whole region. This beautiful spot can get quite crowded with both beachlovers and windsurfers during the high season. Situated 45km northeast of the city center, it’s accessible by both car and bus.
