Atens Restaurants and Cafes

Athens nightlife is full of great things for the visitor to enjoy. Dining options, for example, are quite extensive – here in the Greek capital you can find tasty street food on the go, traditional Greek fare at a great restaurant or world cuisine at a cosmopolitan eaterie. As for bars, the city is thought to rival world centers like New York, London and Paris for its massive variety of bars, discos and clubs all within a compact area.

If money is no object, enjoy a sumptuous feast of French cuisine at the Michelin-starred Spondi (5 Pyrronos, Pagrati, Athens 11638; +30 2107564021; www.spondi.gr) . No dish will disappoint at this top-rated restaurant, where main courses average around €50. For something less formal, Café Boheme (36 Omirou Street, Kolonaki, Athens; +30 210 3608018) has a bistro-style menu of Mediterranean and European dishes to eat in or to go.

When it comes to Greek food, there are of course dozens of restaurants to choose from. Kitsoulas (25 Filikis Etairias, Athens; +30 2106814798) is one of the best places to go for homemade traditional food at prices that won’t ruin the rest of your Athens travel. The simply named Resto (84 Akadimias, Athens 10678; +30 2103810026; www.restobiobar.gr) is another great option right in the center of Athens for Greek as well as other European and Mediterranean dishes, with great outdoor seating.

For bars and clubs, Athens nightlife leaves you spoilt for choice. The James Joyce Pub (12 Astiggos, Monastiraki, Thiseio, Athens 105 55; +30 2103235055; www.jjoyceirishpubathens.com) is a straight forward option for an evening of pub food and import beers. The prices are reasonable too: a large party platter that serves four people, for example, costs just €17. The Cubanita Havana Club (28 Karaiskaki Street 10554 Athens; +30 021033146058) is one of a number of hopping party joints around the city. At this popular Athens nightlife spot you can dance all night long to the Latin rhythms of the live band and DJ. For a more traditional Greek evening, why not try seeing a live show at a Rembetika music club? The Rembetika Istoria (181 Ippokratous Street, Exarchia, Athens; +30 2106424937) is one of the city’s most famous spots for great local folk music.
