Find the good places to shop in Atens

For Athens shopping, the visitor has a whole host of options no matter what goods they are interested in. Market areas offer food or curious antiques, while several pedestrianized shopping areas have every kind of store you could wish for. Conveniently for visitors, most stores stay open until 9pm at night, except on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays when they close early and on Sundays when most are closed altogether.

If you are looking for some Athens shopping on a Sunday, there is no better place than the Monastiraki flea market at Avissynias Square. A huge assortment of stalls selling all kinds of antiques and other curios are available here. There are also lots of great boutique stores as well as cafes and restaurants lining the area surrounding the market.

Another great market of a different kind is the Athens Central Market on Athinas Street in the Agora district. This is the place to go in Greece for the freshest fish, meat, fruit and vegetables, as well as many gourmet food products such as spices, herbs and olives.

For high quality clothes, shoes and accessories, the Ermou Street area is the place to go. Here you’ll find stores such as Benetton, Zara and Bodyshop among many other major international names. This pedestrianized area is crowded year round with shoppers browsing the stores and picking up corn-on-the-cob or hot chestnuts from street vendors.

To the north of Ermou Street, anyone interested in making their own clothes can find all kinds of tailoring supplies at several fabric and material stores in this Athens shopping area. Pattern books by Butterick, Burda, McCall and Vogue are all available here.

When it comes to jewelry, Byzantino (120 Adrianou Street, The Plaka, Athens 10556; +30 210 324 6605; www.byzantino.com) is the most highly recommended Athens shopping spot. Many beautiful and inexpensive gold pieces are on sale here.

If you’re looking for cheap DVDs or other electronics while you’re in town, Public Multi Stores (1 Karageorgis Servias Street, Syntagma Square, Athens 105 63) is the best Athens shopping spot to go to. As an added bonus, the store is located in a beautiful 19th Century building that is an attraction in itself.
